    2007-05-23 03:37:01     Xinhua

Somalia's first president after independence, Aden Abdulle Osman, known as Aden Adde, died on Tuesday at the age of 99 in Kenyan capital Nairobi, reports said on Tuesday.

According to Somali news portal SomaliNet, the late Osman has been bed ridden for a long time but later had to be transferred to Nairobi for further medical treatment.

The transitional federal government sent message of condolence to the relatives and family members of the late president.

"The late president will be vividly remembered as the first democratically elected head of state and relinquished power peacefully," it reported.

He became head of Somalia in 1960. His successor, Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke, was assassinated in 1969 followed by Mohamed Siad Barre's military coup.

Barre lost control of Somalia in 1991 and went into exile. He died in Lagos, Nigeria, in 1995.
