US Senator John McCain on Thursday said America should deploy 15-thousand to 30-thousand more troops in Iraq.
They're needed to control sectarian violence and give the moderates in the Iraqi government the stability they need to guide the country in the right direction.
McCain made the remarks to reporters in Baghdad, where he and five other Congress members are meeting with US and Iraqi officials.
"I believe that more troops would be useful here. There's a hundred ways that additional American troops can be of assistance here, including Anbar province, including the greater borders, including a greater presence in parts of the city that are necessary to be brought under control, working side by side with Iraqi units. "
McCain said he agreed with the recent US Iraq Study Group report's conclusions that the situation in Iraq is "grave and serious", and he said five to ten extra brigades of US combat soldiers must be sent to Iraq.
US President George W. Bush on Wednesday told reporters he's considering a change of strategy in Iraq , but will not be rushed into making a decision.
The US military currently has about 140-thousand troops stationed in Iraq.
