China will ensure the upcoming six-party talks to be conducted in a harmonious atmosphere.
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Qin Gang made the assurance at a regular press briefing Thursday in Beijing.
"China will take an objective and balanced view to take care of the concerns of all parties involved. China will play a role that is conducive to realize the de-nuclearization of the Korean peninsula and maintain the peace and stability of northeast Asia."
Qin Gang says the form of the talks will be either bilateral or multilateral, depending on the wishes of each party.
The spokesman once again points out the success of the talks requires patience, time and most importantly, compromise. Mutual trust is vital to push the talks move further.
The six-party talks, which have stalled for more than a year since last November, will resume next Monday in the Chinese capital.
Meanwhile, Qin Gang also praises and appreciates the work of outgoing UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, saying that Annan's efforts in the past 10 years to maintain world peace and promote progress is highly appreciated. China's cooperation with UN has also been strengthened thanks to him.
"Mr. Annan has been an old friend of Chinese people. We wish him a happy and pleasant life and career after his term finishes."
