Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa has embarked on a quiet diplomacy mission to Lebanon in an effort to defuse growing political and sectarian tensions in the country.
Moussa met with Cardinal Nasrallah Sfeir, head of the Catholic Maronite Church, on Wednesday, day thirteen of Hezbollah-led protests aimed at toppling Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Saniora.
Speaking afterwards, Moussa had this to say:
"There is hope. We are trying to achieve progress and I hope we succeed in it."
Since his arrival in Beirut on Tuesday, Moussa has also held talks with Hezbollah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah.
Lebanese sectarian tension began to escalate last month after six pro-Syrian ministers resigned over disagreement on a new unity government.
The opposition says Saniora's government has lost its legitimacy since Shiite Muslims are no longer represented.
