British Home Secretary John Reid says the British police are investigating the death of former Russian KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko.
Reid spoke in London on Sunday.
"They have gone as far as saying no more than this is a suspicious death that they are investigating"
Forty-three year old Litvinenko was a former KGB agent living in exile in Britain. He died last week of heart failure after falling gravely ill from what doctors called poisoning by the radioactive element polonium.
Litvinenko told police he believed he was poisoned early this month while investigating the killing of Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya, another critic of the Russian government.
British officials have avoided blaming Moscow for his death.
The former spy's death has sparked a public health alert, with authorities preparing to test hundreds of people who may have come into contact with Litvinenko for traces of radiation.
