Experts have called for more efforts to better prevent women from falling victims to domestic violence.

Enhancement of the related legislation, assistance from the government, and social aid programs were among the main suggestions.

Constance Thomas, Chair of the UN Gender Theme Group in China, says it is important for the country to use law as a vehicle to combat the worldwide problem.

Violence against women is seen as a widespread problem. To raise awareness of growing levels of such violence, the UN General Assembly designated November 25th as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

For her part, Prof. Chen Mingxia, Chair of the Board of the Domestic Violence Network, a NGO group explains the basis for a systematic method to end violence against women, particularly in the family.

“The core is to build up links among all related organizations, governmental or non-governmental, to together interfere and stop the violence. Different regions may have different ways to implement this method due to their own situation but the core is the same and in accordance with our national circumstances.”

The conference also kicks off a 16-day international campaign against gender violence. The campaign this year focuses on the close link between advancing human rights and ending violence against women, with advocates stepping up worldwide efforts to bring gender violence out of the private sphere and into public realm.
