In Danvers, a residential suburb of the major US city of Boston, several explosions took place at a nearby chemical plant, causing considerable damage to the small town early on Wednesday.
Roofs of homes were blown off and the windows of nearly 90 homes shattered, some of which were completely destroyed in the blasts. However, despite the strength of the explosions and the destruction they caused, there were no deaths and only 10 minor injuries reported.
Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney was astounded by the damage he saw as the result of the blasts.
"This really is the equivalent of a major bomb going off right in the middle of a city. What a remarkable thing we have experienced in this kind of tragedy from the explosion and no tragedy in the loss of life or serious injury of our citizens."
Many local residents, like Charles Usher, experienced firsthand the strength of the blasts and felt lucky to be alive.
"I heard a loud explosion and glass kind of covered over me while I was sleeping. I woke up and tried to get out of the house. I heard several other explosions and I managed to get out."
Local fire department officials say that it will take days to figure out what exactly caused the explosions.
