The next UN secretary-general, Ban Ki-moon, left for New York on Wednesday to prepare to take over as leader of the world body, ending more than 36 years as a diplomat for South Korea.
Ban expressed his thankfulness to the Korean people at Incheon International Airport.
"I'm grateful to our people for their unstinting encouragement and support they showed both on the election and my mission after the election."
Ban, a 62-year-old career diplomat, will prepare to officially take the helm of the UN on January 1st as the first Asian person to hold the post in 35 years.
Song Min-soon, the presidential security adviser, has been nominated as South Korea's next foreign minister.
