North Korea says that the UN sanctions against it for its nuclear test are a declaration of war, and that the country will deal merciless blows if the nation's sovereignty is violated, in its first response to the UN measures.
The country's Foreign Ministry said North Korea wants peace but is not afraid of war, in a statement read on North Korean television.
"As already clarified by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, it will fulfil its responsibility of realising the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula. But if anyone attempts to infringe upon the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's sovereignty and right to existence even a bit under the signboard of the UN Security Council resolution, it will deal merciless blows at him through strong action."
The statement also said that North Korea will follow closely the course of the US attitude and take corresponding measures, however without specifying what those measures would be.
The sanctions, passed unanimously on Saturday by the UN Security Council, ban the sale of major arms to North Korea and order the inspection of cargo to and from the country.
The US-initiated measure also calls for the freezing of assets of businesses supplying North Korea's nuclear and ballistic weapons program.
