After two informal polls, Ban Ki-moon, South Korea's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, is in the lead to take over as the UN's Secretary-General.
On Wednesday, Ban Ki-moon said that he believed his long career as a diplomat has given him the experience and skills necessary to diffuse international conflicts, especially those concerning North Korea.
"If you are in our position, considering very unique geopolitical situations, when we are divided they are our same brethren. We need to maintain harmoniously peace and security on the Korean peninsula. We need to engage them into dialogue process."
Ban Ban Ki-moon led the first two informal polls, the last with 14 votes in favour and only one against. India's candidate for the UN Secretary General role, Shashi Tharoor came second in both polls.
On Thursday, the 7 candidates for the highest UN position will be voted on by 15 Security Council members. They will cast votes of either "encourage," "discourage," or "no opinion."
Kofi Annan, incumbent UN Secretary General will step down from his role at the end of this year.
