The Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, Barham Salih, arrived in Iran on Tuesday at the head of a high-ranking delegation.

Salih met Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki in Tehran where they discussed the latest developments in Iraq.

Later at a media conference Mottaki told journalists those behind the violence in Iraq had to be stopped.

He also touched on the subject of the ongoing stalement in Iran's nuclear programme.

"The meeting between Ali Larijani, (Iranian chief nuclear negotiator) and Javier Solana, (EU Foreign Policy chief) has been agreed on by both sides. They are trying to fix and finalise the time and location of the meeting now."

The west and Iran have been at odds over Tehran's nuclear programme with the Islamic republic facing the threat of sanctions.

The EU's foreign policy chief Javier Solana and Iran's senior nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani have tentatively agreed to meet on Wednesday in Vienna in a last-ditch attempt to solve the impasse.

An Iranian parliamentary committee on Tuesday approved a bill blocking nuclear inspections if sanctions were applied against the country.
