Three Chinese Peacekeepers Injured in S. Lebanon

Anchor: Three Chinese UN peacekeepers have been lightly injured when a Hezbollah rocket landed at their post in southern Lebanon on Sunday.

Chinese UN peacekeeping officials in Lebanon have confirmed that the rocket was initially targeted at an Israeli army unit passing by a village some 500 meters away from the Chinese contingent headquarters in Henniyeh village, south of port of Tyre.

CRI’s Middle-East correspondent He Jinzhe (贺金喆) has the story.

Reporter: Luo Fuqiang, head of the Chinese contingent with the UN Interim Forces in Lebanon, says the three injured have received immediate medical treatment at a hospital inside the headquarters and their condition is stable now.

The attack comes after one Chinese UN observer was killed two weeks ago when an Israeli warplane attacked a UN post in southern Lebanon.

Some 180 Chinese military officers and engineers as well as two observers are working in southern Lebanon, as part of the UN peacekeeping mission.

On Sunday, China demanded Israel and Lebanon ensure the safety of UN peacekeepers.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang says "China is seriously concerned and strongly displeased with the incident."

He says China has made representations with the parties involved in the Lebanon-Israel clash and demands they take concrete measures to ensure the safety of UN peacekeepers.

Earlier Sunday, Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing, told UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan in a phone conversation that the UN should take tangible measures to ensure the security of UN peacekeepers

The Chinese foreign minister also calls on the UN Security Council to take actions to prevent the conflict from further spread.
