The UN General Assembly has unanimously approved a resolution admitting the newly independent Republic of Montenegro as the 192nd member of the United Nations.
General Assembly President Jan Eliasson presided over the assembly on Wednesday.
“"I declare the Republic of Montenegro admitted to membership in the United Nations."
UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has praised Montenegro’s role in the Balkan region.
"Montenegro may be small in size and population, but it has a significant role to play in maintaining stability in the region and in promoting good neighbourly relations and cooperation in the western Balkans."
Montenegro's admission to the UN comes just over a month after citizens of the Balkan nation voted for independence from Serbia by a slim margin.
Montenegro formerly shared a seat in the UN with Serbia and the two countries have established diplomatic relations.
