The world's longest string of firecrackers, totaling 23 kilometers in length, was set off Friday afternoon in Liuyang, a city in central China's Hunan Province. The lighted firecrackers took one hour and ten minutes to finish and broke the Guinness World Records.

This string of firecrackers is called "Chengchong Ground Red Firecrackers" and was made at the ancient town of Chengchong, a renowned firecracker production center in Liuyang, Xiaoxiang Morning Herald reports.

"Ground Red" is a type of firecrackers, with its name from the fact that when a whole string of "Ground Red" is set off, it leaves a carpet of red paper.

There are altogether 8.9 million individual firecrackers in this string, and took 570 workers four hours to assemble.

At 3:08pm on Friday, a senior city official Fu Xuming set off the firecrackers with a torch, amid the countdown of the crowd. With deafening sound, this string of firecrackers began its long march toward the city center along a highway with an average speed of 10m/sec, witnessed by thousands of people. It finally reached the city's central square at 4:18pm. The Guinness World Records awarded the city of Liuyang with a certificate.

Mayor of Liuyang City Liang Zhong says this success shows Liuyang's ability to produce safe and high quality firecrackers and will attract more business opportunities for the city.
