The opening ceremony for the three-day 3rd National Skill Competition for Disabled People kicked off Friday night in Xi'an, capital city of northwestern China's Shaanxi province, the state-run Xinhua news agency reports.

About one thousand competitors from all over the country will show their merit in the 32 events in five occupations including computer, fashion and handicraft.

This competition, which is held every four years, aims at demonstrating their dexterity, and also serves to evaluate the training programs provided for the handicapped.

Winning competitors will be awarded honor titles, and part of them will be selected to represent China in the 7th International occupational skill contest for disabled people in Japan's Shizuoka Prefecture this November.
