The High People's Court in the Gansu Province has handed the murderer Qiao Jianguo a death sentence with a two-year reprieve, altering the initial verdict from the Zhangye Intermediate People's Court.

Lanzhou Morning News reports Qiao was originally sentenced to death with an immediate execution by local Zhangye Intermediate People's Court for the brutal treatment of two girls he raped on August 12 and September 20, 2004.

Qiao pulled out victims' tharm after rape, resulting in the death of a victim, a 19 year old girl with the pseudonym "Lin Zi". The other victim, 17 year old "Xiao Hua", survived the attack.

Qiao was arrested on September 29, 2004 and the local court convicted him on December 28. He was required to pay 4695.5 yuan (about 590 US dollars) and 87,160.25 yuan (about 10,900 US dollars) in compensation to the families of Lin Zi and Xiao Hua respectively.

The death sentence was later suspended because Qiao provided different testimony at each of his trials and the case went to the high court.

In the final verdict, the high court said Qiao received the two year reprieve on the death sentence because he surrendered to the police and his confession at the trial has not been corroborated with other evidence.
