The first Sino-US strategic economic dialogue opens in Beijing on Thursday.
Analysts say the top level meeting will address some of the problems that plagues the economic relationship between the two countries, as well as expanding their economic interests.
CRI's Xu Weiyi reports.
Reproter:
The strategic economic dialogue is currently the highest-level regular negotiation mechanism between China and the United States.
Eight US ministers participate in the meeting, including Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez.
Vice-Premier Wu Yi and Commerce Minister Bo Xilai are some of the high-profile delegates from China.
Professor He Maochun is an international studies expert from Beijing-based Tsinghua University.
He says the fact China and the US are holding a rational and practical dialogue at a strategic economic level is proof that their relationship is maturing.
"Looking ahead at the future development of the world's economy and their own interests, the two countries need to further communicate with each other. They should reach consensus on strategic issues of mutual concerns."
At the opening ceremony, Chinese Vice-Premier Wu Yi says the talks will focus on overall, strategic and long term macro-economic issues of mutual concern.
The two sides will discuss how to redress the trade imbalance, promote energy security and improve the environment.
Other issues, like the revaluation of China's currency, better protecting intellectual property rights, knowledge sharing and relaxing the US' control of high-tech exports to China are also high on the agenda.
Professor He Maochun says the talks' should be even more concerned with expanding the common interests of both countries.
"In terms of bilateral economic relations, the key job is not only to solve some disputes but also set up plans and strategies that will benefit the future development of both sides."
The meetings are the first under a twice-a-year strategic economic dialogue mechanism, which was launched in Beijing in September.
