Following a related survey, Professor Cai Jiming, also a member of China's advisory body, suggested that the authorities could reduce the current official holiday for National Day and Labor Day from three days to one, while revising related laws to let people have a day off on four Chinese traditional festivals: Tomb-sweeping Day, the Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-autumn Day and the eve of the Chinese Lunar New Year.

Cai said statistics show that the Golden Weeks have failed to realize the original expectation of increasing domestic consumption during the festival holidays. In contrast, it brought unbearable side effects such as deteriorating service quality and soaring business costs, in addition to public management challenges for the government.

Cai also proposed that the one-day official holidays be linked to the near weekends so that people can have a three-day weekend.
