The unofficial olympics of the telecommunications industry, ITU Telecom World 2006, has officially opened in the Hong Kong AsiaWorld Expo.

World-famous telecom giants have gathered to showcase their state-of-the-art products and technologies to visitors from around the world at the expo.

CRI Hong Kong Correspondent Liang Tao has the details.

Reporter:
This year the ITU Telecom World expo has been held outside Geneva for the very first time.

The CEOs of top companies like NEC, Cisco, Motorola and Intel have arrived in Hong Kong to attend the "Living in the Digital World"-themed forum taking place alongside the exhibition.

NEC Corporate Communications Division Manager Takehiko Kato spoke about the latest trends in technology and products.

"In the ITU Telecom, we are focusing on the energy-in (technology), energy-in stands for the next generation network, which enables us to be secured communications."

Because it's been held on Chinese soil for the first time, the 2006 exhibition has attracted more than 100 Chinese enterprises this year. Less than 10 attended the 2003 expo in Geneva.

China Telecom, China Netcom, China Mobile, China Unicom and China Satcom are among the big Chinese names participating in the Expo.

71 Hong Kong exhibitors, the big names and small and medium enterprises, are also participating, along with around 630 multinational corporations.

China Unicom (Macao)'s Deputy General Manager Chen Wu stressed the expo's importance.

"This exhibition is of great importance in enhancing understanding, facilitating exchanges and cooperation, promoting common efforts to grow the ICT industry and bringing into full play the positive role of ICT industry. It also provides a platform to share experiences."

Chinese exhibitors - including companies from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan - occupy 24 per cent of the total space at the exhibition.

An estimated 60,000 visitors will enjoy the mega-telecom event over the course of the week.

David Collins from Australia has spent the whole day touring the displays.

"It's a tremendous event. It's great to see many big companies here try to promote their communications."

China day on Tuesday will be one of the highlights of this year's event, with an opening ceremony, grand VIP lunch, business exchanges and an official reception in the evening.
