This year is the first time ITU TELECOM WORLD 2006 - the "Olympics" of the telecommunications industry - has been held outside Geneva.
It's also the largest and most prestigious exhibition and forum Hong Kong has hosted in recent years.
Officiating guests at the opening ceremony included the Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, Wu Bangguo and 2006 Nobel peace Prize Winner, Professor Muhammad Yunus.
Wu Bangguo addressed all present at the opening ceremony.
"With the largest gathering of exhibitors, this is the biggest telecom exhibition featuring the latest products, services, technology and trends in the global ICT industry."
"Living the Digital World" is the theme of this year's expo.
And it will have two parts - a dynamic exhibition and a high-level forum.
The exhibition will allow industry players to showcase their latest equipment, services and technologies to their clients.
The forum will provide a platform for industry players, users and senior government officials to debate critical issues, like policies and regulation, key technologies, business applications and environment.
Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang welcomed the guests at the opening ceremony.
"This prestigious international mega-event bears special significance for us. It is one of the largest trade shows ever held in Hong Kong. It brings not only tremendous economic benefit to Hong Kong and the Mainland of China, but also new business opportunities. It underlines Hong Kong's unique position as a global hub for ICT. It reinforces our position as an international events capital, a leading digital city, and Asia's World City."
Telecom World 2006 is organized by the ITU and will run from December 4th to 8th at the AsiaWorld Expo in Hong Kong.
About 700 exhibitors from across the world will share around 66,000 square metres of floor space at AsiaWorld Expo and showcase their achievements to an estimated 60,000 visitors.
The event is forecast to generate about 900 million Hong Kong dollars, or 115 million US dollars, in direct economic benefits to Hong Kong.
