Hong Kong SAR Government has extended its heartiest congratulations to Margaret Chan following the endorsement by the World Health Assembly of her nomination as the World Health Organization Director-General.
Chief Executive Donald Tsang said Dr Chan is the first Chinese elected as WHO Director-General, adding that it is a great honor for the nation and for Hong Kong.
Acting Chief Executive Rafael Hui said Dr Chan has been elected with overwhelming support. This reflected the wide recognition of Dr Chan by all the voting countries and the recognition of her professionalism.
Secretary for Health, Welfare & Food Dr York Chow said the WHO is an important international organization that safeguards the health of all.
He said the WHO's work is closely related to the well-being of all the world's citizens. Hong Kong will work closely with WHO and participate actively in global endeavors to combat diseases and improve global health.
The Executive Council's non-official members said her election by a wide margin of votes shows the WHO has full confidence in her rich experience and outstanding ability.
It also shows that with the Central Government's full support, Hong Kong people will be better able to make contributions to the international community.
