China says it will not stop its economic aid and normal trade to North Korea.
At a regular press conference on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao says that economic aid to North Korea is not banned by UN Security Council Resolution 1718, which was passed earlier this month after North Korea announced that it conducted a nuclear test.
"Providing economic aid to North Korea is a long-standing policy of China. This economic aid aims to improve people's livelihood and help them out of difficulties. It will be conducive to maintaining the stability of the Korean peninsula and to North Korean people."
As for reports that some Hong Kong and Taiwan residents are travelling to the Diaoyu islands, an area disputed between China and Japan in the East China Sea, Liu Jiachao stresses that the Diaoyu Islands have always been a part of Chinese territory.
"China has indisputable sovereignty over the Diaoyu Islands. The Chinese government has always proposed to resolve the dispute through negotiations, on the basis of historical fact."
Liu Jianchao also asks Japan to be "calm" in their treatment of the Chinese who have embarked on the voyage to the Diaoyu Islands.
