On the sideline of the ASEM summit in Helsinki, Chinese premier Wen Jiabao says a demonstration recently held in Taiwan demanding the resignation of its leader Chen Shui-bian is an issue that should be tackled by Taiwan people themselves.
But the premier says that the Chinese mainland will always be on high alert towards secessionist activities on the Island.
"I want to stress the central government's persistent policy of promoting cross-straits economic cooperation and realizing the 'Three Direct Links.' We'll continue to do everything we can to benefit Taiwan people."
Hundreds of thousands of Taiwan residents are now holding a round-the-clock sit-in in Taipei, demanding that Chen Shui-bian step down over allegations of corruption.
Meanwhile, in regard to Japanese leaders' visits to the Yasukuni Shrine, Wen Jiabao expressed the wish that in the future, Japanese leaders can handle this issue correctly so as to remove the political obstacles between the two countries.
"We wish that from now on, Japanese leaders can properly handle the issue from the perspective of the fundamental interests of our two countries, which will be beneficial to our two peoples as well as the peace and stability of the whole world."
