Thousands of bookworms took advantage of an offer of free admission and extended opening to pack the Hong Kong Book Fair Saturday night.
Organizers said that between 9:30 pm and 11:30 pm some 44,000 people passed through the doors - 10 per cent up on last year.
Such was the rush that free entry was offered half an hour earlier than the original 10:00 pm starting point.
And organizers were turning away people by 11:30 pm because the place was crammed.
The Trade Development Council waived the entrance fee for those arriving between 10pm and 2am as bus operators ran special routes to take readers home.
