Urgent Limitation Due to Booming Tourism

The operation of Qinghai-Tibet railway has been a great boost to tourism to Tibet Autonomous Region, with the number of travellers increasing steadily. Given the great demand, the railway administration has begun limiting the number of tickets to travel agencies.

Wang Anhua, Assistant Manager for Beijing-based Gang Zhong Travel Agency's Domestic Tourism Department, describes us the situation.

"It's hard to get train tickets right now. In light of the order from the railway administration, only 20 tickets are released to each agency per day. Take ours for example, we have received 70 tourists registered to start the trip on July 20th. If we were given just 20 tickets for the day, 50 people's schedules would be delayed."

Also, due to the tourism boom, people are calling for Potala Palace to be protected. The tourist site has capped its number of visitors at 2300 per day. Tourist groups have to book tickets several days in advance to ensure admission, while individual tourists can book a ticket on site one day before their scheduled visit.
