China is continuing to monitor its man-raised Panda Xiangxiang, who was freed two months ago in Wolong, Sichuan Province. Comprehensive monitoring is being conducted to discover the life led by Xiangxiang in the wild.
The monitoring focuses mainly on Xiangxiang's living area, choice of resting place and contact with other untamed pandas.
The research staff trained Xiangxiang face to face before it was freed. But now, those monitoring the panda try to avoid being too close, so as to make Xiangxiang more independent and less dependent on humans.
Zhang Hemin, Director of the China Conservation and Research Center of the Giant Panda, says the monitoring project utilizes the Global Positioning System and wireless orientation system to figure out Xiangxiang's exact territory.
"Through monitoring, we find Xiangxiang has gradually adjusted to wild environment. The fact that other feral pandas have been found, indicates that Xiangxiang has been merged into the species step by step. The monitoring will last till 2008, by which time Xiangxiang will have transformed into a downright wild panda."
