The European Parliament on Tuesday called for a direct financial commitment to ensure that 12 demonstration projects testing the permanent underground storage of carbon dioxide are constructed by 2015.
The parliament believed that measures unveiled by the European Commission are insufficient to provide the desired incentives for the development of such a technology.
The house wanted operators of the new carbon capture and storage technology to be provided allowances from the European Union's Emission Trading System, under which emission ceilings are set for each company and those that exceeded their quotas need to buy credits from those that have surplus.
The house also proposed to allocate 500 million euros (about 630 million U.S. dollars) in the EU research budget for the new technology. |
