Liverpool Beats PSV Eindhoven 3-1 in Champions League
    2008-12-10 09:02:31     Xinhua

Liverpool beat PSV Eindhoven 3-1 Tuesday to finish as Group D leader of the Champions League.

The victory helped Liverpool collect 14 points, two ahead of Atletico Madrid, and extended Liverpool's 42-year unbeaten run against a Dutch team.

Atletico Madrid drew 0-0 at Marseille to advance as second placed in Group D. The French team finished third to earn a spot in the UEFA Cup.

Balazs Dzsudzsak's 36th-minute corner deep into the Liverpool area ended up in front of the unmarked Danko Lazovic, who slotted it in underneath goalkeeper Diego Cavalieri to give PSV the lead.

Ryan Babel leveled for Liverpool, rising unchallenged to head in Lucas' free kick in the 45th. Albert Riera put Liverpool in front with a left-footed effort from 25 meters in the 68th and David Ngog converted Robbie Keane's pass in the 77th to seal the win.

With just three points, PSV completed its poorest Champions League campaign in 11 straight group stage appearances, finishing one point less than its 1999-2000 overall haul.

Tuesday's defeat is likely to renew repeated calls for Stevens' resignation after seeing PSV lose five of the 14 matches in the league this season.
