Former Bulgarian Referee Chief Accused of Match-fixing
    2008-12-10 23:10:59     Xinhua

The former chief of the Bulgarian football referee commission, Borislav Alexandrov, was on Wednesday charged with match-fixing.

Alexandrov was accused of attempting to influence the result of seven Bulgarian football league matches during the 2007-2008 season, public prosecutor Boryana Betsova told reporters.

In three of the cases, Alexandrov had lobbied in favour of the small team of Belasitsa Petrich, which narrowly avoided relegation as a result, Betsova added.

Several football referees had accused Alexandrov and the vice-president of Bulgaria's state agency for youth and sports, Ivan Lekov, of pressuring them to fix matches.

Lekov, also a former UEFA referee, was arrested in late September and forced to resign, like Alexandrov.
