Vice President of the Bulgarian Football Union (BFU) Nasko Sirakov confirmed that national coach Plamen Markov has been fired due to poor results, local press reported Wednesday.
Sirakov told reporters that the BFU had unanimously agreed to terminate Markov's contract which was due to expire at the end of 2009.
Sirakov said that the members of the Executive Committee held a lengthy discussion about the national squad and its coach, adding that a replacement had yet to be found and that both Bulgarians and foreigners will be approached for the post.
Markov, a former CSKA Sofia coach, had shrugged off calls upon his resignation after Bulgaria's humiliating 6-1 loss against Serbia on Nov. 20.
