Breda Humiliated by Sparta Rotterdam, Ajax Draw with Utrecht
    2008-12-01 01:26:06     Xinhua

NAC Breda were humiliated by hosts Sparta Rotterdam 4-0 on Sunday to fail to catch up with Dutch premier league leaders AZ Alkmaar, while another title-contender Ajax were forced to a 1-1 draw at home by Utrecht.

Breda, three points behind AZ coming into the match, were stunned in the first half to fall three goals behind in 20 minutes as Sparta's Arne Slot opened the score in the 22nd minute, followed by two goals by Rydell Poepon in the 29th and 42nd minutes.

Breda's misery continued in the second half, and Kevin Strootman's strike made it 4-0 for Sparta in the 67th minute.

In Amsterdam, Ajax, four points adrift of the top of the table, rallied from a goal down to force a 1-1 draw with Utrecht, which took the lead through a goal by Sander Keller in the 35th minute. Miralem Sulejmani equalized for Ajax at the 61st minute.

Elsewhere, Vitesse drew at home with Feyenoord 1-1, and fast-improving Nijmegen trounced bottom-placed Volendam 6-0 at home.

On the league table, AZ have widened their lead to three points ahead of second-placed Ajax and third-placed Breda, which have 26 points apiece, while Twente, Groningen, PSV Eindhoven and Nijmegen round out the top seven.
