Angola to Hold Yearend International Race

The Angolan government is to hold the 53rd Yearend International Race "Sao Silvestre" on December 31 in the capital Luanda with the finish line at Cidadela Stadium.

At a news briefing here at the weekend, Carlos Teixeira, chairman of the Angolan Federation of Athletics (FAA), told reporters that the registration for the participation in the race started on Friday and will close on December 26.

According to the official, so far six countries have confirmed to take part in the race, including Zambia, Cape Verde, Mozambique, Kenya, Zimbabwe and Portugal.

He said the government has released 300,000 U.S. dollars for the winners of the race with the gold winners of both men and women categories gaining a 10,000 dollars prize each, and the second, third and fourth getting 8,000 dollars, 6,000 dollars and 4,000 dollars respectively.

He estimated that some 5,000 people will take part in the race.

The 2007 edition of the long-distance running race was won by Kenyan Elijah Nyabuti, in 46:35 minutes while his fellow countrywoman Grac Momany clinched the women's title in 53:13.
