New York City to Hold Annual Marathon Sunday
    2008-11-02 06:57:20     Xinhua

Some 40,000 runners from around the world will participate in the 39th annual New York City Marathon on Sunday.

The upcoming race, spanning 26.2 miles or 42.195 km, begins at 9 a.m. local time on the Staten Island side of the Verrazano Bridge and finishes in Manhattan's Central Park. It covers all five boroughs of the city.

Along with the Boston Marathon and Chicago Marathon, New York City Marathon is among the pre-eminent long-distance annual running events in the United States and is one of the World Marathon Majors.

Local media said that a new feature this year is staggered start times, with groups of runners beginning at different times to ease congestion, but whoever has the best total time will be the winner.

Top finishers on the man's and women's side take home 130,000 U. S. dollars in prize money.

The race is organized by New York Road Runners (NYRR) and has been run every year since 1970. It is held on the first Sunday of November and attracts professional competitors and amateurs from all over the world.
