Twice world champion Stephane Lambiel announced his retirement from competitive skating on Thursday.

The 23-year-old Swiss said his decision was prompted by a persistent thigh injury sustained at the 2008 world championships which stopped him training at the highest level.

"I have not been in the position to train at 100 percent," said the 2005 and 2006 world champion who also won silver at the 2006 Winter Olympics.

"You can only win when you are fully fit but my body does not allow that any more," Lambiel told reporters.

Lambiel has frequently criticized skating's new points system with its increased emphasis on athletics at the expense of artistry.

He said Thursday the new requirements placed more burden on skaters' bodies.

Lambiel added he would continue to take part in non-competitive gala events.
