Spain Coach Del Bosque Praises Defense
    2008-10-16 19:45:55     Xinhua

Spain coach Vicente del Bosque praised his defense following their dramatic 2-1 win over Belgium in Brussels on Wednesday night.

Andres Iniesta had leveled the scores after Belgium had taken the lead, before David Villa nodded home a Guiza cross in the last minute of the game to maintain Spain's 100 percent start to their World Cup qualifying campaign.

Although the effectiveness of his strikers was crucial, Spain had to work hard at the back to keep a talented Belgian side at bay and for that reason Del Bosque singled out Barcelona-stopped Carles Puyol for his praise.

"Puyol got us out of trouble against Belgium. The good news for Spain is that we have players of the quality of Iniesta and the courage of Puyol."

"The fact is that he has played a perfect game. We have very good players in Spain," said Del Bosque in Thursday's edition of sports paper Diario Marca.

The Spain coach admitted it had been a difficult match for his side.

"It was very complicated for us against an excellent Belgium side, which is only going to get better. However, I have got to congratulate my players because they went out to try and win the game. It could be that we had a bit of luck at the end of the match, but we looked for it," added Del Bosque.

Spain's win gives them 12 points from their first four qualifying games and with group rivals Turkey dropping points away to Estonia, they now have a four-point cushion at the head of their group.
