Five Myanmar Archers to Compete in Asian Grand Prix, SEA Archery Championship
    2008-10-11 19:18:35     Xinhua
Five Myanmar archers will compete in the Third Asian Archery Grand Prix (2008) and Third Southeast Asian (SEA) Archery Championship in Manila, the Philippines later this month, local media reported Saturday.

The nine-member Myanmar archery team, comprising five players -- four men and one woman -- will take part in recurve and compound events in both Asian and SEA archery competitions, participated by 25 countries and regions from Asia, featuring men's and women's recurve and compound individual and team events, the weekly Premier Eleven sports journal said.

Zaw Win Htaik, Nay Myo Aung and Yan Aung Soe will participate both in recurve individual and team events in the Asian and SEA archery competitions scheduled on Oct. 25-31, while Ye Min Swe and female archer Aung Hnyein will appear in the compound individual events, it said, adding that Myanmar expects gold medals not only in compound individual events but also for Zaw Win Htaik and Nay Myo Aung in recurve individual events.

Myanmar only archer Nay Myo Aung competed in the last Beijing Olympics men's individual recurve event, participated by 64 qualified world archers, finishing 43th after losing to the 13th world-ranked Poland archers 106-110 in the first stage. Nay Myo Aung's marks gaining in the Beijing Olympic Games is better than that of Zaw Win Htike who grabbed gold medal in the 23rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in the Philippines in 2005.

The Myanmar archery team competed in the First Asian Archery Grand Prix (2008) in Bangkok, Thailand in March, grabbing one gold and two bronze medals but Myanmar did not appear in its second edition in Tehran, Iran in July.

Myanmar hosted the First SEA Archery Championship at the Kyaikkasan Archery Ground here in January 2005. Myanmar won the championship with eight gold and three bronze medals.

Indonesia won the Second SEA Archery Championship, which is also hosted by Myanmar, in November 2006, pocketing eleven gold, three silver and four bronze medals, while Myanmar stood third with one gold, eight silver and two bronze medals.

The MAF, which was founded in 1995, has entered about 40 international competitions since then. The MAF grabbed 134 medals -- 42 gold, 42 silver and 50 bronze -- from the 23 international competitions including Asian Games, Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, Asian Archery Grand Prix, SEA Championships and Invitational Tournaments.
