Kenya's Athletic Body Holds Elections
    2008-10-09 17:51:44     Xinhua

Kenya's athletics body will select the new chairman on Thursday as a tight fight will be staged as expected.

Former marathon champion Moses Kiptanui threw his hat into the ring one month ago, promising a bare-knuckled fight against long-serving Isaiah Kiplagat.

"I am going for the chairmanship head on. I am prepared for the battle and I mean well for the sport," Kiptanui said.

Kiptanui, 40, takes the battle to long-serving chairman Kiplagat who has served in that capacity since 1992 when he replaced the late Paul Boit. Also in the race is Athletics Kenya Southern branch chairman Paul Mutui.

"Kiplagat said four years ago he would not contest again. That is why I am gunning for the top seat," Mutui said.

"Everybody has a reason for declaring his candidature. Mine is simple: I want to change the way things are run in Riadha House (AK headquarters)," said Kiptanui.
