Spain's Olympic Boss Pleased with Spain's Beijing Performance

The head of the Spanish Olympic Committee, Alejenado Blanco, confirmed on Wednesday that he was satisfied with the performance of the Spanish squad at the Beijing Games.

The Spanish ended the Beijing Games with a balance of five gold medals, 10 silver and three bronze.

"It is a very positive performance," Blanco said in Madrid following a meeting of the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE).

"The medals were very hard to win in Beijing. We had six gold medals as far as I am concerned, because we should have had an extra one in sailing," he said.

"We had 11 finalists in athletics and a lot of them also had medal options. We are satisfied because it is the second best result in our history," he said.

"Before the Barcelona Games in 1992, our best display was at Moscow, where we won six medals, then we got 22 in Barcelona, 19 in Athens and 18 in Beijing. Those are very good results," the Olympic chief said.

However, Blanco also had to talk about drug use in Spanish sport following the positive dope test of cyclist Maribel Moreno.

"She went through six controls this year and three in the month before the Games. You can't test every sports person every day. When someone wants to dope, you can't help it."

"We carried out over 1,000 tests on our competitors," insisted Blanco.
