Italians Win in First Game of World Cup of Indoor Soccer
    2008-10-01 10:03:12     Xinhua

The Italian national indoor soccer team, made up entirely of naturalized Brazilians, won their first match on Tuesday in the World Cup of indoor soccer.

The team of Brazilian-Italians struggled, but ended up beating Thailand by a score of 1-0. Both teams are part of Group B of the tournament.

All 14 players on the Italian national team are from Brazil. All the players claim that there is little opportunity for them to represent Brazil due to the high level of competition. The only Italian-born member of the team is the head coach.

Although the Italians dominated the ball possession, 64%, they were only able to produce one goal. The goal came in the 15th minute of the first period when Italy was awarded a penalty kick.

The Brazilian, Darley Grana took the kick and did not miss. Thailand had a golden opportunity to tie the game four minutes later after having been awarded a penalty kick, but Innui kicked the ball directly at the goal post.

In the second round of play, the Italians will face the United States on Thursday in Rio de Janeiro. Thailand has a bye, but will return to action on Saturday against the Americans.
