Beijing is taking high-tech measures to ensure a working drainpipe network for the Olympics.
On Wednesday, workers at the Qinghe Wastewater Reclamation Plant demonstrated a cable remote controlled closed circuit television (CCTV) inspection system.
A mechanized crawler can carry lights and a digital video camera into the underground pipes to send data back to the computer. The video images of the inner pipes appear on the screen in real time.
The crawler can turn at a right angle, dredge pipes, and even repair the inner surface of the pipes.
Since 2007, the municipal water group has investigated 917 kilometers of drainpipes near the Olympic venues to ensure the system will work.
Beijing currently has over 4,000 kilometers of drainpipes.
