    2008-06-05 04:32:11     Xinhua

Co-host Sri Lanka drew 2-2 with Afghanistan in the 7th South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) championship Group B opener on Wednesday night.

The visitors drew first blood in the 7th minute when Habif Harz Arian scored for Afghanistan.

The Sri Lankan skipper Chatura Maduranga found the equalizer shortly.

Arian scored his second goal to lift Afghanistan to 2-1 lead but Sri Lankan E. B. Channa cut the deficit again.

In the first game played earlier in the day, Bangladesh drew 1-1 with Bhutan.

Sri Lanka will face Bangladesh in the next crucial match. Sri Lanka lost their last SAFF encounter with Afghanistan by 2-1 in Karachi in 2005.

The 7th championship, co-hosted by Sri Lanka and Maldives, opened Tuesday evening in the Maldivian capital of Male.

India thrashed Nepal 4-0 while Maldives upset Pakistan 3-0 on the opening day of their respective Group A matches.

Bangladesh, Bhutan, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka are in Group B.

The championship is due to conclude with the final in Colombo on June 14.
