Hong Kong and Macao SAR delegations have arrived in Kunming for the 7th Chinese National Games for the Disabled, hoping to reap gold medals from the 15 sports to be hosted by both Kunming, capital of the southwest Yunnan province and neighboring city of Yuxi.
Hong Kong has dispatched a 79-member delegation, including 45 athletes, for nine sports of athletics, badminton, bocchie, judo, powerlifting, shooting, swimming, table tennis and wheelchair basketball, with medal hopefuls from the track and field, tennis and swimming, said chef de mission Patrick Ng.
Its best gold hopefuls include So Wa Wai, a cerebral palsy sprinter, who holds both 100m and 200m world records in his T36 class. He lived up to his reputation by winning the titles in the IPC world athletics championships and the Far East and South Pacific Games for the Disable last year.
The 26-member Macao delegation arrived in Kuming on Wednesday and will compete in three sports of athletics, badminton and bocchie.
Carlos Angusto de Brito Batalha, vice chef de mission of the Macao delegation, revealed that bocchie is their stronghold with the gold medal in sight and the track and field events will also likely produce the medals for them.
In the 6th Games, Macao got one gold and three bronzes while Hong Kong won one gold, two silvers and two bronzes.
