Standard Classification to Ensure Fair Competition at China Games for the Disabled
    2007-05-09 19:40:17     Xinhua

To ensure fair competition at the upcoming 7th Chinese National Games for the Disabled, classification for the athletes will be conducted in accordance with the Paralympic standards, an official of the local organizing committee said in Kunming on Wednesday.

"Medical classification is very important to the Games for the Disabled, we will spare no efforts and stick to the standards of the International Paralympic Committee," said Wang Baoshan, deputy director of the Games' medical classification committee.

"The classification for the athletes must be both strict and accurate as it will serve directly, checking for the selection of the Chinese athletes for the 2008 Paralympic Games," Wang explained.

The National Games for the Disabled will be officially opened on May 12 in Kunming, the capital city of Yunnan province, with the participation of 2,251 athletes nationwide.

The three-day classification efforts have been in full swing at all competition venues in both Kunming and neighboring city of Yuxi for the athletes in 15 sports, with other five sports already concluded one year ago.

"All the athletes will go through the strict classification procedures, except those who attended the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens and the 2006 World Championships," said Wang.

More than 20 medical experts with classification certificates and dozens of assistants have been working for the National Games for the Disabled.
