Smoking will be banned at the main sports venues during the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008 and special smoking zones will be set aside for smokers in certain venues, Beijing's vice-mayor, Liu Jianmin, said Sunday.
An inter-governmental agencies meeting on Olympic-related issues was held Sunday during the ongoing annual session of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Congress (CPPCC), the top advisory body of China.
At the meeting, Liu Jianmin, who is also executive vice-president of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad, said in addition to setting up smoking zones at sports sites during the period, smoking areas will also be designated in other public areas.
The current smoking ban regulations in Beijing only list gymnasiums as designated smoke-free areas, but not include stadiums, the Beijing News reports.
According to the smoke-free Olympic agreements signed between the International Olympic Committee and World Health Organization, stadiums would also be designated as non-smoking areas during the sports events. The scope of smoke-free zones in Beijing is expected to be enlarged.
Meanwhile, citizens are also encouraged to speak civilized language and are discouraged from cursing during the international sports events.
