The Executive Board of Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) held its 75th meeting on Thursday, identifying priorities of the volunteer work for 2007.

According to a report heard at the meeting, the volunteer work in the preparatory period for the Beijing Olympic Games has advanced in its key areas as planned, with positive results achieved. Up to now, the number of volunteer applicants from Beijing-based universities has reached 170,000 and that from other sectors of the society has totaled 70,000.

BOCOG and other organizations have fully started the implementation of the specialized volunteers' program, further engaged in "Smiling Beijing" campaign, carried forward volunteer training and timely summed up the experience of the volunteer work in this year's test events, thus advancing the establishment of the volunteers organizational system. The meeting reaffirmed the achievements of the volunteer work.

The meeting noted that the core aspects of the volunteer work for 2007 should be team practice and examination and integration of the work mechanism through test events. The meeting called for more efforts to recruit Games-time volunteers from provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities. Attention should be paid to the thematic campaign entitled "Chinese volunteers carry out the concept of People's Olympics." Enthusiasm of the majority of youth needs to be brought into full play to support youth leagues' Olympic torch relay activities across the country. Great emphasis should be put on the selection and training of volunteers, with an aim to pick a number of volunteers with passion, awareness of responsibility and professional skills to ensure a high-quality and high-standard volunteer team for the Olympics. Useful experiences of Doha Asian Games and other large-scale international sports events need to be drawn to let every Olympic guest experience volunteers' smiles, enthusiasm and sincerity.

After hearing a report on the operational plan of the Olympic Green, the meeting noted that the plan should be people-oriented and that service facilities should be improved and perfected in accordance with the principle of "Security First," with an aim to provide the guests with comfortable and convenient services. Opinions and suggestions of experts and various service recipients need to be taken into full consideration and every endeavor should be made to meet the needs of the service recipients. Service facilities should be tested and checked in the next year's test events and detailed solutions should respond to the problems found.

The meeting was chaired by BOCOG President Liu Qi, who is also member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and secretary of Beijing Municipal CPC Committee.

Present at the meeting was also Chen Zhili, state councilor and BOCOG first vice president.
