Hansen bettered the previous record of 2min 09.04sec he set in Long Beach, California, on July 11, 2004.

It was Hansen's second world record of the week. On Tuesday, the 24-year-old improved his 100m breaststroke world record with a time of 59.13sec.

At the time he said he was surprised, because he had been focusing in training on the 200m.

At last year's world championships in Montreal, Hansen completed the 100m-200m breaststroke double.

In winning the 200m title on the final day of the championships, Hansen finished ahead of Eric Shanteau (2min 11.38sec) and Scott Usher (2min 11.96sec).
