A group of 100 guards are attending the two-day training course, said Lu Peng, an official with Beijing Municipal Health Bureau, during the launch ceremony yesterday.

Before the Games open, 80,000 security guards will receive Beijing Emergency Rescue Centre's first aid training to enhance their capability in handling emergencies during the Games.

"It's really a pity if a guard who comes to keep order just stands by the injured after an accident and can do nothing else to help them," said Wang Linli, 42, one of the guards who received the training.

"The skills I learn here will be very useful for both my work and my life," he said.

Chen Zhi, a doctor from the centre, said at the ceremony that the security guards play an important role in looking after accident victims before medics arrive.

Geng Guangjun, general manger of Beijing Security Service Company, which will be responsible for choosing the 80,000 security guards for the Games, said the training is a good chance for them to provide a "qualified and safer service."
