In 2007, wheelchair-bound people will be able to visit seven temples and ancient museums in Beijing.

Xinhuanet reports Beijing has invested over one million yuan, or around 125,000 US dollars, in the construction of barrier-free facilities in some famous temples and ancient museums, including Dajue Temple, Zhihua Temple, Five-Pagoda Temple, Great Bell Temple, White Pagoda Temple, Longevity Temple, Confucius Temple and the Imperial Academy. All construction work will be completed in 2007.

And, barrier-free facilities will be installed in more of Beijing's 116 scenic spots by the year 2008. These spots include the Imperial Palace, Summer Palace, Lama Temple and Beihai Park.

The facilities include raising platforms, lifters and ramps. Meanwhile, raised bumps to guide the blind along set pathways will be made up of special materials conducive to protecting the ancient architectures.

At the moment, it's rather difficult for the old and disabled to visit these famous ancient tourism spots because of their high thresholds and inconvenient facilities.

Statistics show there are 1.88 million people over 60 years old and 622,000 disabled people living in Beijing. And the capital will greet even more people from around the world during 2008, when the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics are held.
