Madhu Sudhan's Experience in China

Madhu Sudhan is the supervising manager of an Indian restaurant in Beijing called "Tandoor".

This is just one branch of the Indian-owned group Foresight Hospitality.

The group has Tandoor restaurants in Shanghai and Chengdu, as well as the Indian capital New Delhi.

He is a very gentle and prudent man. He is in the restaurant every single day, making sure the guests are looked after as carefully as possible.

Interview Details
Shelley:Did you meet any difficulties when dealing with Chinese governmental departments?
Sudhan: No. They're very cooperative. We got everthing proper settled. The government in 1994 when our first branch was set up is not so open but they didn't resist Indian restaurants. They support us.
Shelley: What attracts you to open the Tandoor here?
Sudhan: China and Inida have lots of similarities in food basis. Chinese food is very popular in overseas countries and the situation is the similar to the Indian food. We want to make Chinese people more familiar with Indian food and let them know what is Indian food.
Shelley: How many of your customers are Chinese?
Sudhan: In Beijing, 70 percent customers are Chinese but in Shanghai, Chinese customers are relatively less. This is because we started the first restaurant in Beijing, but people in Shanghai think Indian food is too spicy, afraid to eat.
Shellley: What's your principle when doing business?
Sudhan: The first thing is the quality, the quality should be the No.1. That's everything. And we are very honest to our guests. When they spend money here, what we serve should be value of the money.
Shelley: What advice will you give to those foreigners coming to do business in China?
Sudhan: It depends what business they want to do. If those smaller business, the good behaviour first should to study the market. I see the cosmetics is very promising in China.
