Aviator Wins Golden Globes
2005-1-18 17:45:01    CRIENGLISH.com
The Howard Hughes epic "The Aviator" and "Sideways" have earned best-picture Golden Globes.

Veteran director Martin Scorsese's movie "The Aviator," about the life of eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes, has won three Golden Globe awards, including best film drama and best original score for composer Howard Shore.

Leonardo DiCaprio won the best dramatic actor for playing Howard Hughes.

"No writer could even imagine the life that Howard used to live. He fixed 20 lives in one. He was a man obsessed with everything he was given in his life. Women, airplanes, money and business would not stop him until he reached his ideal profession. When you play such an obsessive role like that, it is completely challenging and you can't wait to do so."

But director Scorsese missed out on the director award to Clint Eastwood, whose female boxing drama "Million Dollar Baby" has been a hit with critics. Hilary Swank, who played the boxer, won the award for the best dramatic actress.

"Sideways" finally walked off with two awards, one for best musical or comedy and a second for best screenplay for director Alexander Payne and his writing partner Jim Taylor.

Actor and comedian Robin Williams, the winner of five previous Golden Globes, was given the Cecil B. DeMille Award for career achievement.

Spain's "The Sea Inside," about a quadriplegic's battle to take his own life, was named best foreign language film.
Chinese director Zhang Yimou's latest hit ¡®House of Flying Daggers' was nominated for this category. But it failed to win the judges' favor.

Aiming high at this year's Golden Globes and Oscars, Zhang Weiping, producer of the domestic blockbuster was disappointed at the loss, while admitting that the film is not perfect yet.

"It's a pity for us. We were really anxious to win because the Golden Globes are one of the most influential film awards, especially for a Chinese film. Our film is not good enough, that's why it lost in the awards. We'll try out better productions and we still have chance to win in the future."

House of Flying Daggers has collected over 160 million RMB yuan at box office in China. But the film has also been questioned by some critics and audiences for its "illogical plot and weak characters".

The film has been entered in the Oscar's for the Best Foreign Language Film category. Though losing to ¡®The Sea Inside' at the Golden Globes, Zhang Weiping says the film still stands a chance to win the Oscar.

"Though we failed to win the Golden Globe Awards, but it is still likely that the film will win in the Oscar race, because there are over 5,800 judges for the Academy Awards and there will surely be suspense."

The Golden Globes, given out by the 93-member Hollywood Foreign Press Association, are Hollywood's first major show of the awards season. They are widely regarded as a strong indicator of favorites for the Oscars in February.
